Evaluation through adaptive model (ATC) in the levels of thermal comfort in summer in offices in Mediterranea locations.

2014

The design of the building-plant system in the case of office buildings has rarely considered the adaptive model of comfort almost always limited to the control of temperature and humidity and only in some cases of PMV and PPD. Specifically when the building interacts with a climate characterized by high values of external temperature and humidity for long periods, and with high solar radiation in the presence of large glazed areas, it is crucial to take into account relevant aspects of the principle of thermal adaptation. The long stay of the occupants in an air-conditioned environment leads, at the request of colder temperatures very distant from those indicated by the criteria of accepta…

Thermal Parameters Measurements of High-Rise Building Envelope

2016

In buildings, to ensure the thermal comfort of the occupants and to keep the energy consumption as low as possible, a correct design of the thermal system is necessary. To do so, an appropriate determination of the thermo-physical properties of the wall materials is needed, particularly; new light-weight building technologies are widely used in the construction of the building envelope. One of these parameters, particularly important in Mediterranean climatic dynamic conditions is the heat capacity, due to the presence of the sun’s energy contribution in hot and cold seasons. The value of the heat capacity in such like materials is typically quite different from the declared parameter, obta…

Retrofitting existing buildings by means of innovative envelope components: low-impacting new assemblies

2020

Current policies addressing the energy efficiency of buildings aimed at the control of their overall primary energy demand, require not only that the edifice envelope has to be properly designed to optimize its thermal performances, but also that the eco-friendly properties of the involved building materials have to be properly taken into account, in order of assessing all the associated environmental costs. In fact, the design of envelope structures that are able to realize proper levels of thermal insulation and, in the same time, to employ materials characterized by low environmental impacts, are believed as the most effective strategies to be adopted in the aim of addressing the above-m…

Insulating Building Components Made from a Mixture of Waste and Vegetal Materials: Thermal Characterization of Nine New Products

2021

Nowadays, energy efficiency and sustainability are the fulcra of building policies. These policies promote the use of new technologies and materials that can reduce the primary energy involved and the environmental costs of construction, guarantying at the same time a high level of comfort for the building’s occupants. Synergy between previous construction techniques and the use of new materials should be pursued by employing materials with a low environmental impact and optimal thermal insulation properties. Within this framework, new materials derived from the agriculture sector, and waste or recycling products from the industrial/agricultural sectors have been studied. The aim of this pa…

Multi-Agent Systems as Effective Tools for the User-Based Thermal Comfort: an Introduction

2010

Through the paper the characterization of a comfort model, enriching that proposed by Fanger with an adaptive approach, is carried out using a Multi Agent System (MAS). This is a well suited coordinated set of Intelligent Agents, that are software applications interacting in order to follow user in his own needs and preferences in relation to indoor comfort, adapting to the changes of context variables. As a matter of fact, MAS are systems aware of the scenery where users live, following them in their own needs and preferences and adapting to their expectations. Indeed, thermal comfort conditions in the built environment are strictly related not only to the thermal and geometric building fe…

Towards achieving net-zero energy communities: Investigation of design strategies and seasonal solar collection and storage net-zero

2019

Abstract This paper explores a solar mixed-use community and its potential towards achieving net-zero energy status. This mixed-use community combines residential and commercial/institutional buildings. Energy performance of this neighbourhood is estimated in terms of energy consumption and generation potential by means of building integrated PV systems. A solar thermal collector system combined with a borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) is designed to investigate the impact on the overall performance of the neighbourhood. The design of solar thermal collectors and the sizing of short-term thermal energy storage is based on the analysis of the thermal loads for heating and domestic hot w…

Analysis of the Behaviour of an Optimized Magnetorheological Brake

2013

This paper presents the optimization process of MR – magnetorheological brake in order to define its configuration, and to reach the requested vehicle braking torque. FEM analysis previously carried out, concerning structural sizing of such a brake, showed that both braking torque and brake mass did not satisfy the requirements. Due to the necessity of limitation on the suspended mass of a motor vehicle, the optimization of the form of MR brake stator has been executed, including determination of its contribution to the total mass of the brake. Thus a percentage reduction of approximately 40% was obtained. In order to estimate the brake temperature which results from the transformation into…

Mode I fracture toughness behaviour of epoxy resincarbon fiber composites cured by ionising radiation

2012

In this work Mode I fracture toughness behavior of Electron Beam cured unidirectional CFRP laminates is investigated by means of standardized Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests. A matrix system, comprising a DGEBA epoxy monomer and a typical initiator of cationic polymerization, was used and panel samples assembled by hand lay-up. Curing was achieved by 20 to 40 minutes irradiation on a pulsed 10 MeV Electron Beam accelerator. One batch of resin was also mixed with 10 phr of a PES thermoplastic monomer in order to enhance the matrix toughness. The influence of fibre-matrix adhesion, matrix toughening and matrix crosslinking density on the mode I delamination behavior have been investigated …

Advances in Strain Gauge Measurement on Composite Materials

2010

This article gives an overview on the application of strain gauge techniques to the analysis of the strains in composite materials. The orthotropic behaviour of the composite influences the performance of strain gauges that are calibrated for use on isotropic materials. The article considers therefore the typical topics of the strain gauge technology applied to composites with particular reference to the compensation of thermal output, the measurement of the coefficients of thermal expansion, the determination of the strain and stress state, the influence of the misalignment error, the reinforcement effect, the determination of the stress intensification factor, the analysis of residual str…
